A dog’s breathing rate tells us a lot about their activity and exertion levels. At rest, a dog breathes around 15 times per minute, while light activity increases this to about 30 breaths per minute. But when engaging in scentwork, a dog’s respiratory rate skyrockets to 150–300 breaths per minute.

Why? Because scentwork isn’t just sniffing—it’s an intense mental and physical workout. Each breath draws in new odour molecules, fuelling their brain’s processing power. Their olfactory system is so advanced that 10 minutes of concentrated sniffing exerts them as much as an hour-long walk.

This is why scentwork is an excellent way to tire out a dog, particularly for high-energy breeds or those with limited mobility. It engages their brain, taps into their natural instincts, and provides the kind of enrichment that a standard walk might not.

If you want to keep your dog mentally stimulated and satisfied, letting them explore the world through their nose is one of the best ways to do it. Interested in joining our regular fun scent sports classes? Click to find out more!
