Balu is a 4-year-old Lagotto Romagnolo who has always been a very active dog. With a high prey drive coupled with a curious and nosy nature, he would easily become bored and seek his own stimulation—often in ways that weren’t ideal for either of us.
When we started scent work with Emma, I couldn’t have imagined the transformative impact it would have on both Balu and our relationship together.

Building Confidence Through Success
One of the most noticeable changes has been in Balu’s confidence. Scent work requires dogs to figure out problems independently while also working cooperatively with their handler. The repeated success he experiences during these sessions has significantly bolstered his confidence and resilience, enabling him to better cope with challenges in other environments and situations.
Channelling His High Prey Drive
While Balu still gets quite triggered by wildlife and his desire to chase hasn’t disappeared completely, the focused nature of scent work has provided a mentally stimulating outlet for him. He no longer explodes when spotting potential prey, and I’m now much more successful at getting him to disengage and focus on me instead.
Group Success Through Walk and Sniffs
Emma’s walk and sniffs/walk and trails have been particularly beneficial for Balu’s social development. He used to get very stimulated in unfamiliar environments and would struggle when approached by unfamiliar off-lead dogs. The structured group walks with other dogs have helped him gain confidence in canine company, while the search/trail exercises help him channel his energy productively. Though he still scans the environment for wildlife, he remains concentrated during searches.
The Sleep Effect
Perhaps the most surprising benefit has been how thoroughly scent work exhausts Balu—in the best possible way. After our first session with Emma, I actually contacted her because Balu went straight to his bed and was fast asleep within seconds! I was worried something was wrong with him, as this was previously unheard of. Now I understand that the mental stimulation of scent work is genuinely tiring, sometimes more so than physical exercise alone.
Becoming a Team
The most rewarding aspect has been how Balu and I have become a much better team. Scent work has taught me to become more attuned to his body language, giving him space and being patient to let him figure things out. Consequently, his trust in me has increased tremendously.
Instead of trying to become a “dog whisperer,” I’ve learned that, very much like with horses, it’s actually the dog that whispers—I just needed to learn to listen and understand what he was communicating.
