Olfactory Adaptive Behaviour in Scent Sports

Adaptation occurs when the brain stops noticing a continuous odour. If we are exposed to a smell for an extended period, our brain gradually stops acknowledging it. This is why, for example, when we enter a kitchen, we initially notice the aroma of food, but after some time, we stop perceiving it. However, if we step outside for fresh air and then re-enter, the smell becomes noticeable again.

The same principle applies to dogs. When a dog is within a scent cloud, continuously inhaling an odour, their brain eventually stops recognising it. Even though the scent molecules are still entering their nose and reaching their receptors, the brain ceases to process the odour, making it difficult for the dog to locate the source.

This phenomenon can cause problems in scent detection and tracking work. If a dog follows a scent for too long without a break, their brain may stop acknowledging the odour, making it harder for them to distinguish whether they are still on track.

To counter this, dogs naturally reset their noses by briefly leaving the scent area. They might step away from the track, odour cloud, or scent pool to take in fresh air with no odour present. This reset happens within milliseconds, allowing the brain to process the scent again when they return.

For working dogs, allowing this reset is crucial. Handlers should not force dogs back into the scent area too soon, as this can prevent them from effectively recognising the odour again. If a dog is unable to reset, they may struggle to track properly, give false indications, or become confused in training.
